Mohammad Kazem’s mother stays at home to care for him and is unable to work herself. The family gets a small charitable stipend. They bought a house in a southern neighborhood by selling their grandmother’s house and getting a loan. The house needs repairs. Due to the family’s financial situation, Mohammad Kazem’s older sister dropped out of school to help. She works as a store assistant. Mohammad Kazem’s other sister is also a talented student.

Fatemeh’s father passes away in a motorcycle accident after colliding with a wall at a high speed. He was uninsured so the family received nothing after his passing. Fatemeh’s father was a day laborer who was unable to leave income for his family. They now live in their home but with only some welfare and charitable assistance. Due to a lack of job opportunities for women where they live, Fatemeh’s mother is unable to find work. Despite painful neck problems, she does traditional needlework on clothing. Fatemeh’s older sister had to marry early (before finishing her studies) due to their financial situation. Fatemeh’s brother was a kidney transplant survivor who passed away five years ago in an accident.

They do not have a refrigerator, air conditioner, washing machine, or water heater.

Her father is the local mosque prayer leader. In Afghanistan, religious scholars are paid by the local community but the mosque is in a poor area. Additionally, her father was injured in the war against the Taliban and cannot do other jobs. Zakera is one of nine children. Her three oldest siblings have no education due to the family’s poverty. One of her older brothers (fourth oldest) is preparing for college entrance exams. Their house is part of the mosque, which is dedicated to the prayer leader. They lack many household essentials.

Amir Hosein is a polite and intelligent ninth-grade student. He is from Kashan, Iran. His father passed away before he was born from a construction accident. His mother had two boys and a girl from a previous marriage. Her first husband also passed away in an accident. Amir Hosein’s older brother and his wife moved to a village near Mashhad. He is a construction worker but struggles to find work in the village. Amir Hosein’s other brother also works in construction and drives a truck. His sister and her child are also living in that village. His mother weaves carpets. Amir Hosein’s maternal grandfather gave them land. They are trying to build on it so they can stop paying rent. However, the house is still unfinished. The family is supported by a charity and receives a low income.
