Mahdi

Mahdi is a shy, eight-year-old boy from Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan. He is behind in school. His family promised Mahdi to sign him up for school when they can afford it, thus he needs sponsorship. Because of his father’s pain and old age, he guards cattle for meager income. His salary cannot meet his family’s minimum needs. His mother suffers malaria and his sister has consistent stomach pain but the family cannot afford treatment and travel costs. Mahdi’s oldest sister, Tamom, has her diploma but can’t afford the college entrance exam courses. She wants to study law. The entire family lives with their oldest brother and his family in a two-bedroom house. There is only one window and no plumbing or heater.

Yousef

Yousef is a talented student. He is 16 years old and studying tenth grade and lives with his parents and brother, who is a day laborer in a rented house in Kermanshah, Iran. His father is sick and disabled, his left eye is blind, and his right eye has fifty percent vision, which has treated. He also has kidney stones, severe lumbar disc herniation, and varicose veins in his legs. As a result, he cannot work. Thankfully, Yusuf and the other family members are in perfect health. Yusuf's sister dropped out of school due to financial difficulties and agreed to marry a day laborer. The bathroom is located in the yard and in poor condition. The family’s income is from government welfare, and a charity’s small pension that does not cover the expenses of this family, and they are in need. Yusuf does his best to improve his education.

Laxmi is 19 and in 12th grade. She lives in Kathmandu, Nepal and is studying business in an intermediate level at a government college. The subject includes basic business strategies and some basic knowledge about accountancy.  A bachelor’s degree in this subject will allow her to excel with new skills and knowledge. In Nepal students who acquire intermediate level education in business (like Laxmi), computer science, or pure science can apply for an IT (Informational Technology) program as Laxmi wants to do after she finishes her 12th grade in business. Nowadays, IT is very good subject in Nepal with good job prospects. Many students are attracted to this degree. It seems Laxmi is influenced by her brother who is studying the same subject. She probably heard a lot about the subject from him and she has maximum information about the process of admission to fee structure as well.

Hossein’s mother is his second wife and has four children. Hossein's two older sisters are married but one is still at home because they can’t afford her dowry. Hossein’s youngest sister is disabled. Hossein's mother also suffers several health issues. She is a farm laborer who also gathers and sells mountain herbs. The family lives in a house which was previously uninhabitable. A charity is now renovating is. They lack basic essentials.

Zainab's mother sold homemade bread for two years, but she became ill with lung disease. Now she is a street vendor with meager income. Zeinab's other sibling dropped out because of the expenses but fortunately she went back to school and is now in university.

Her mother works in people's homes for a low salary despite back pain for which she cannot afford a doctor. Walking to work and heavy labor increases the pain, but there is no other choice. It is difficult to pay for three children's education, given the cost of rent and their mother’s low income.

Kalpana

Kalpana is 20 years old and a resident of Kathmandu, Nepal. While she lives in Nepal’s capital now, she originally grew up in the remote village of Sindhuli. She is studying social work and it is her first year in college. She loves playing volleyball. Her father has two wives and so, Kalpana has six siblings. She is the youngest. Her father is responsible for the care of five of his children after Kalpana’s older sister married last year. Kalpana’s father works as a small vender of concrete rings. Her mother is a housekeeper. For all they try, Kaplana’s parents’ income isn’t enough to feed the family. They do not own a house in Kathmandu. They have some land in their village but it does not alleviate their difficulties. Her parents care about education. However, they were forced to ask Kalpana to not continue. She then shought a scholarship. Her mother is suffers hyperthyroid and her father has high blood pressure.

Mojtaba

Mojtaba is a calm and very studious boy of 12. He attends sixth grade in Bushehr, Iran. His father worked as a welder for many years, but died tragically. After the death of his son, Mojtaba’s paternal grandfather put a piece of land in the name of the family and his mother built a house with the help of a loan. All of their living essentials are either second-hand or were donated. For many years, Mojtaba’s mother earned a living as a farm laborer, and her family struggled financially. Government welfare and a charitable stipend are their other financial resources. Mojtaba's three brothers are all gifted and talented, and two of them are studying at a public university. His mother is unable to pay for her children's transportation to and from university.

Hamed

Hamed is a smart 11-year-old student from Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan. He is currently in 3rd grade. He missed a year of school because of his body weakness. Among all the subjects, Hamed is a fan of Dari and English languages. He also loves soccer and plays it with his friends in his spare time. Hamed lost his mother three years ago, and his father is dealing with eye issues. He lost his right eye’s vision because of the cataract which was not being taken care of; and his left eye is very weak too. This happened to Hamed’s dad after he lost his wife. He cannot afford to support his family and buy school supplies for his children. He has to ask neighbors for their used clothes, books and bags for his kids. Hamed also has a 13-year old brother who is in 7th grade. Hamed’s grandmother is 60 years old. She lives with them and takes care of all the housework. Their house has two rooms and a common room. They made a kitchen at the corner of the common room. All the appliances of the house are very old, and they are missing an air conditioner, water heater and washing machine. This makes it very difficult for Hamed’s grandmother, because she must wash the clothes by hand in the very cold weather of Mazar-e-Sharif’s winters. They try to keep their place warm with a heater, but frequently do not have enough fuel.

Ezzatollah, our cute boy, is eleven years old and in 3rd grade from Mazar-e-Shrif, Afghanistan. He loves studying and is funny. He says that when he grows up, he wants to become a dentist so that he can help his family and serve his country. His father was disabled and sold vegetables on a cart. Unfortunately, he had cancer and passed away five years. Since then, his mother cares for the children. She and her older daughters clean raisins at home and receive very little money for each kilogram. Ahmad, the eldest son of the family, quit school after his father passed and is a mason’s apprentice. He and his mother carry the financial burden of the family. However, battling the everyday hardships while frequently unemployed due to ongoing insecurity in the country is outside of his abilities.
