Additionally, her father was injured in the war against the Taliban and cannot do other jobs. Zakera is one of nine children. Her three oldest siblings have no education due to the family’s poverty. One of her older brothers (fourth oldest) is preparing for college entrance exams. Their house is part of the mosque, which is dedicated to the prayer leader. They lack many household essentials.

Maryam's older sister, Zohre, is 11 years old and in fifth grade. Their loving mother always encourages her daughters to study hard and build a good future. Maryam and her family live in a house that her uncle rented. It is a small and very old house. They don't have household appliances like fridge, A.C., or heater.

She rents the basement out for some money. Both families use the same bathroom without any plumbing or water heater. She is unable to care for herself and her three children with her income.
